Welcome to the Flat Branch Volunteer Fire Department.
My name is Kurt Winpegler, and I have the distinct honor of serving as Fire Chief for this outstanding department and the Flat Branch community that I proudly call home.
I was born and raised in Colorado, where I developed a strong sense of service and community that eventually led me to a career in public safety. I am a U.S. Army veteran, having served six years in uniform before beginning my fire service journey.
My fire service career began in 2003 with Anderson Creek Emergency Services, where I had the privilege of working through every rank up to Assistant Chief before moving to the Flat Branch area in 2012. Shortly after joining Flat Branch Volunteer Fire Department, I continued my journey of service and leadership, eventually earning the opportunity to serve as your Fire Chief.
In my full-time career, I serve as a Captain with Fort Bragg Fire and Emergency Services, where I have proudly worked since 2008. This role has allowed me to refine my leadership, operational, and instructional skills through daily experience in one of the nation’s most dynamic fire service environments. I am also a North Carolina-certified Fire Instructor and hold several state-level teaching qualifications, allowing me to help develop the next generation of firefighters.
Outside the fire service, I am the owner and operator of a fire truck testing business, ensuring that emergency apparatus meet the highest standards of performance and safety. My family and I also run a successful hay production farm, proudly contributing to the agricultural strength of our community.
On a personal note, I am blessed with a supportive wife and two amazing boys who share in the pride of serving and supporting our great community.
